Recent media highlights that there remains a high level of confusion on how Safe Schools Coalition Australia operates and what support it provides.
The Safe Schools Coalition Australia provides professional development and support for school principals and teachers (and other school professionals), at their request. The program is designed based on feedback from schools that they require more support in providing safe and supportive environments for LGBTI young people.
This work is carried out by a national coalition of well-established and credentialed organisations who are supporting principals and their teachers with evidenced-based information and resources.
The SSCA materials are available online for all to review.
Data shows that LGBTI young people experience high levels of bullying and abuse, and this has an effect on their educational outcomes.
What we know is that if we can work to reduce bullying and abuse LGBTI young people have a better chance of succeeding at school and have better mental health outcomes.
Since it was first federally funded in 2014 the program has been rolled out nationally to set a baseline of understanding about the matters impacting on LGBTI students to aid school management and teachers guidance, and the entire school community.
