Australian schools are doing great things around the country to be welcoming and safe for the whole school community. Safe Schools Coalition Australia works with schools to help them with those efforts.
Safe Schools Coalition Australia offers a suite of free resources and support to equip staff and students with skills, practical ideas and greater confidence to lead positive change and be safe and inclusive for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, staff and families.
We work together with individual schools from a range of diverse contexts to tailor support that meets the needs of their community. This includes government and independent schools, schools in diverse geographic locations, and faith-based schools.
School membership and engagement with Safe Schools is voluntary and all the services and resources we provide are free and used at the discretion of each school. The first thing we do after a school joins is to talk with school leadership and key staff. They can request support in the following areas:
Tailored professional development
We offer a range of training options for schools, including whole staff presentations, specialised training modules and workshops. Sessions can be adapted to the needs of the school and range from introductory sessions through to in-depth training around more complex issues. Training materials will draw upon national and international research and best practice to give teachers and other school staff insight, ideas and confidence.
Staff and student surveys
Our surveys of staff and student perceptions, knowledge and experience are a great tool to help you get a clearer picture of your school climate and what is really happening in your school, and from different people’s perspectives. These short online surveys can be accessed at the click of a button and will provide your school with the data it needs for developing a targeted and evidence based approach across the whole school community. They also help you measure change over time.
Guidance and consultation
Whether you want guidance to support an individual student, teacher or parent, or are looking for help to implement inclusive and supportive whole school practices or policies, our expert staff can provide you with tailored support and free consultation. This includes support in the process of affirming the gender identity of a transgender or gender diverse student in your school. It also includes guidance on inclusive practice in all teaching and learning areas.
Resources for school staff
We have a range of free, high quality printed and digital resources which help school staff to respond to homophobic and transphobic behaviour and actively support and include gender diversity, intersex and sexual diversity in school communities. We also have a free teaching resource to help teach the topics of gender diversity, intersex and sexual diversity in the classroom – All Of Us. Our range of official Safe Schools resources are the ones with our logo and the 'Official Resource' banner. Other resources on our website are ones we recommend schools may also like to consider, so check them out and decide which ones are right for your school.
We have a range of resources and supports for young people who want to create positive change in their schools. We can help with setting up and developing student-led activities, events and groups such as Stand Out groups (gay-straight alliances) in schools to actively create the kind of school culture that everyone wants – one that’s positive and supportive.
